Captains Blog – August 2022

August came and went with very little rain falling from the sky around Atherstone GC, even the average golfer was getting some great distances due to ground conditions.

I’m not much of a gardener and love this weather because I haven’t got to cut my lawns so often, but the opposite is what Rob and his team need for growth and to make our course look its best.

I definitely don’t envy him and his team with these extraordinary conditions to contend with.

One of the big events to take place during August was our Seniors Open which was really well attended and well organised, congratulations to Mick Ferguson & Phil Challis, can I thank Mick Shakespeare for his role as official starter.

Congratulations to our Ladies on reaching the Warwickshire league final, this is taking place on 26^th September at Handsworth GC against Kenilworth GC.

It’s with great sadness that I end my blog with news of the passing of John Reay a friend to Atherstone GC and local golf in general, John’s funeral is on 19^th September @ 5.30pm at Coventry Cathedral.

Good Afternoon
The new BRS booking system is GOING LIVE taking bookings for next Monday at 8pm tonight. . We shall still be using the old system up till then. To be able to book tee times from Monday 15th August you must have registered as per instructions sent in previous email and then be enabled by Phil in the office before you can book tee times.
The new system will be far more beneficial to members and visitors with lots of extra features to keep you all up to date with the latest news and events.

Captains Blog – July 2022

July started with another well-run quiz night, congratulations to Gareth Leyshon and team who were winners on the night, Ian Jacob quizmaster, superb again.

2^nd July 2022 was only momentous because 69 years ago my poor Mum had me lol.

That weekend was our club championship over 36 holes and finally after several years trying

Nigel Rhodes was victorious.

Tripartite week started at 6am on Monday 4^th July with Simon Horton & me competing against Nuneaton GC and Hinckley GC Captains & Vice Captains in the 54 hole challenge, Atherstone GC winning again, since its inception in 2010 we have never lost.

It was a glorious week for our players and caddies, AGC winning at Junior, Ladies & Senior level bringing home The Chadaway Trophy, The Rose Bowl & Hodge Trophy.

All these trophies can be seen in the right-hand trophy cabinet.

Thank you to all the team captains and helpers who made it a great week for Atherstone GC, personal thanks for their help to Simon Horton, Gary King, Jayne Shaw, Phil Challis, Keith Guild, Neil Smith not forgetting Mark Sedgwick and our bar staff team.

The month ended as it started with very dry weather, congratulations to Rob & his team for keeping our course in so good condition during this drought.

Congratulations to husband & wife team Shaun and Sherrie Carter for their second success in mixed pairs competitions at Atherstone GC.

Again, mixed fortunes this month for our teams.

On a personal note this month has been very trying both at our great golf club and health wise, I’ve been very moved by the kind words I have received from our members, this is in my opinion the best golf club in our area both on and off course.

On a lighter note, Nuneaton Vice Captain Lee Wright quoted me regarding our rivals when I received the inaugural Cliff Wright Trophy on behalf of Simon & Myself.

After winning ALL of our League Matches this Season, the Ladies Team is through to the Semi Final v Maxtoke, which will take place on Monday 8th August at Kenilworth GC.
