Captain’s Blog – October 2018
Well, what can I say…… Where has the first six months of my tenure gone? In all honesty, it’s flown by because I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself along the way so far! So, after a hectic golf season, it was finally good to get away with Mrs C for a well-earned holiday, where I was able to re-charge my batteries and return ready to complete the second half of my captain’s year.
September was another busy month, starting off with the Men’s Open…… Well, you must live on the moon if you’ve not heard the result of this competition given how much coverage it received on social media!! Congratulations goes to Ollie Tomkinson for guiding his playing partner Ian Smith to victory with an excellent better ball score of 61.
The Pro Am sponsored by the Research Garage Group once again proved to be an excellent event, with Rob Challis working tirelessly to ensure everything ran smooth. The whole day had a special feel about it, where upon arrival you were greeted with a host of cars surrounding a hospitality unit where coffee and breakfast baps were being served. As always, the course was presented in top condition with Alan and his greenstaff doing an excellent job. The feedback from the players, both amateur and professional alike about our Pro Am event is one, we as a golf club should be very proud of!! Congratulations to all those that managed to pick up a prize in a competitive field, with the top professional on the day being our very own Paul Broadhurst and the amateur team winners were Nigel Rhodes and Gaz Greenway.
The charity Texas Scramble event proved to be popular once again, with Malc Clarke and Geoff Freeman doing an excellent job and managing to raise an impressive £2400 towards Prostate Cancer UK. Well done guys for the tireless work you put in to make the day a success!!
Congratulations to all those that qualified for the end of season ‘Champion of Champions’ and gala dinner, the final competitions for the season were played out and the last remaining qualifiers were…….
Paul Mathews Trophy: John Wilson with a net 66
Captains Prize: Dave Leggatt with a net 67
The Tuesday night draw £500 jackpot was won during September by Stuart ‘Spud’ Taylor, who decided he’d upgrade his wardrobe to the latest collection of Navy Blue clothing!! Please remember the draw still takes place on Tuesday evening between 8pm and 9pm and the prize pot will increase each week in £25 increments, so please feel free to come along.
Finally, September closed with the Captains Am Am…… The event was well supported with 19 teams taking part on the day with a shotgun start, the weather was good and the course was in great condition. I did manage to cause a stir with the announcement that it was all four players in each team to score up the 1st and 9th holes, despite a few colourful words that would make a sailor blush, everyone embraced the challenge in what proved to be a fun afternoon. Following on from the presentation, the entertainment rumbled on into the evening with everyone being entertained by a fabulous male / female duo and sampling the aptly named ‘Ryder Blue’ shots in support of the European Ryder Cup team. I’d just like to thank Phil Challis for all his help in putting this event together and also to all those that supported the event whether it was in the afternoon, evening or both!!
Coming up in October
October see’s the start on the Winter Leagues…… As you will have already seen on the notice boards around the changing rooms, club website and on social media, Bob Waters has done a fantastic job in organising the fixtures and will update the tee times in small chunks to take into account the daylight hours available. Bob also collects the result sheets on Monday evenings to update the league tables, so please bear in mind that he needs sufficient time to do these updates and he will endeavour to get the results and tables posted on the club website and social media as soon as possible.
Presentation night is on Saturday 20th October, following the Gala dinner the evening is open to all members to come along and enjoy the entertainment and share in the success of all those that had a trophy to collect.
October concludes with the Autumn Quiz, which takes place on Friday 26th October. Ian Jacob does a great job hosting the evening and being the quiz master, so if you fancy testing the old grey matter then please come along and show you support in what promises to be a fun evening. The rules are simple, its teams of up to 8 people, £1 per person entry and phones are not permitted!!
