Captain’s Blog – July 2018
Well, what can I say…… Before I get my teeth into this month’s blog, may I take this opportunity on behalf of everyone at Atherstone Golf Club to congratulate life member Paul Broadhurst for winning his second seniors major title in the Senior PGA Championship by 4 shots. Well done Paul!!
We’re into the business part of the golfing season now with the competitions, matches and team events coming thick and fast. I know it can be difficult at times to arrange our singles and pairs matches, but can we all please ensure that every attempt is made to get the matches played before the deadline date for that round. Without exceptions, I’m also guilty and lost on the toss of a coin!!
After last month’s plea for help with regards to member’s suggestions for the Captain’s first tee project, may I thank everyone who made a suggestion or shared an idea with me, I’ve now got a feel for what members would like to see and I’ve also been armed with some really useful links to numerous websites which will enable me to draught up a proposal.
Hands up all those that enjoyed the family fun day…… Well I certainly did!! The event was well supported with approximately 80 participants and numerous spectators walking the fairways. I had the pleasure of watching my wife Louise suffer putting on the greens, which at one point almost boiled over into a divorce!! The kids enjoyed the bouncy castle until the heavens opened up and I’m sure everyone enjoyed Phil’s barbeque with the help of celebrity chef Gary ‘Elton John’ King. There are numerous people to thank who helped on the day, your support was much appreciated, so that now leaves me to congratulate Lee J and Casey H for winning the competition with a great score of net 38 and also Becky Tomkinson winning the non-golfer prize with a creditable 16 putts.
I’ll quickly skip over this next part, as no one wants to hear how the Men’s Captain hooked one out of bounds on the Captains Drive-in, off the first tee with everyone watching and laughing! Well done to Ladies Captain Ann, who despite the nerves, fared much better and managed to knock one onto the fairway for a combined drive in distance of 63 yards…… Popular winner Mark Youson was the closest guess and managed to claim a box of golf balls.
Once again, Phil Challis proved there is still life in the old dog, not only has he had an haircut the same as the Captain, he also won the Club Championship with a gross score of 147 over the two rounds. ‘Beware of the injured golfer’ is a phrase we’re all accustomed to….. Well done to Chris Bassford and his dodgy knees for winning the Denham with a two round net score of 137.
Other competition scores for June include Simon Horton and his playing partner winning the Invitation open with a fantastic score of 63 and Karl Hartless for winning the Sale Cup with a par/bogey score of 6 up.
With June coming to an end, it’s now time to draw our attention to the Tripartite…….
Coming up in July
July starts with a bang and opens with Tripartite week….. The men’s and junior teams take part in their respective Jarvis and Chadaway matches on Wednesday at Hinckley Golf Club. Thursday, Atherstone are the hosts which see’s the ladies compete in the Rose Bowl and the seniors in the Hodge, with the week cumulating on Friday with the Scratch team playing at Nuneaton Golf Club. Good luck to all those players fortunate enough to be selected, it wasn’t an easy choice to make the selections by any stretch of the imagination, but I hope we can count on everyone’s support throughout the week?
Thank you to all those that purchased a World Cup sweepstake envelope, now that the group stages are complete and the competition is hotting up, the envelopes are now ready for collection. Please enter your name on the relevant sheets against the team in your envelope. Coming up over the next few weeks will be the draw for the British Open, so please get in early as this always proves to be a popular event.
