Captain’s Blog – January 2019
Well, what can I say…… Christmas has come and gone and we’ve entered into the New Year, I hope you all had a great time over the festive period? Traditionally, January is a pretty quiet month in the golfing calendar, so this edition of the Captain’s Blog will hopefully be fairly short!
The kids Xmas party proved to be a great success, with 45 children being entertained by Alakazam with a disco and magic show until Santa and his elves arrived, with each child receiving a present from the big fellow himself. A special thanks must go to the reluctant Neil Smith for taking on the role of Santa and what a great job he done of it! One comedy moment from the afternoon that brought great amusement was during the yes/no game where I was stitched up, answering a simple question “I am……… YES”! Even the 3 year olds BOO’d me off the stage!
The 80’s party night was fantastic, where we were entertained by the very popular ‘Lets Eighties’ band, I’m sure we’ll be seeing these again at AGC in the future? On the night we were graced by the presence of many 80’s icons, including Freddie Mercury, Prince, Delboy, Jimmy Saville, Maverick & Goose, plus many many more…... Thank you all for supporting this event and especially those who made an effort to come in fancy dress!
It was great to see a combination of both morning and afternoon players enjoying the Members Party and Christmas lunch, it emphasised the friendliness and togetherness that exists within the club. After lunch we were entertained by the comedian Nipper Thomas and the afternoon rumbled on into the evening with a spot of music, singing and dancing. A big thank you must go to Joy and the staff for providing us with an excellent meal!
Congratulations goes to Nigel Aucott whose winning ticket was drawn out in the membership draw.
Coming up in January
As previously mentioned in my opening comments, January is pretty quiet on the activities front, so I will take this opportunity to mention what we have coming up for the remainder of my year in office…….
In February there will be a Valentines night meal, incorporating an Italian themed menu. Please see the posters around the clubhouse for menu options and booking will be taken behind the bar.
In March we start with the Spring Quiz and complete the month with the Annual dinner dance. Again, please see the posters around the clubhouse for details of the dinner dance and forms are available behind the bar to reserve your tables.
The Tuesday night members draw resumed this week with the prize fund currently standing at £200, the prize fund increases in £25 increments each week and is building up nicely, so please feel free to come along to see if your name comes out in the draw……..
It’s that time of year again I’m sure you all love……. Membership renewal? Everyone’s membership renewal envelopes are available for collection on the bar and any remaining envelopes will be posted out over the coming week.
As you are all aware, the start of 2019 saw the introduction of amendments to the rules of golf. Please see the information about the rule changes on the stage area in the clubhouse and please feel free to pick up a copy of the ‘rules of golf’ books that are also available in the bar. It will be to the benefit of us all if we took 5 minutes to refresh our memories of the rule amendments.
On behalf of the members, staff and officials of Atherstone Golf Club, I would like to pass on our best wishes to our club steward and stewardess, Bob & Joy on their upcoming wedding…... It’s about time Bob stepped up and I hope you both have a wonderful day!!
Ooooops…….. Who said this edition of the Captain’s Blog would be short?
