Captain’s Blog – May 2018
This is the first instalment of what I hope will be a series of monthly ‘Captain’s Blogs’, where it gives me a chance to catch my breath, take stock and to provide a round-up to our members of what has happened in the previous month and to also keep them informed of what we have coming up. So, here go’s…….
Well, what can I say……. Where has that first month gone?
My Captain’s year has started cold, wet and miserable, but despite the awful weather we managed to find a spot dry enough to host the kids Easter egg hunt, with 40+ kids in attendance. A good time was had by all, with each child receiving an Easter egg and topped off with a special visit from the Easter Bunny.
Meet the Captain’s night once again proved to be a success with a nearly full clubhouse being entertained by the fantastic acoustic duo Matt and Ben from The Weekenders Band. For all those who attended, I can only apologise for what I call dancing!!
After the first leg of the Avon League final, Atherstone managed to gain a 4-2 lead over Oakridge, with the second leg falling foul to the wet conditions, leading to the match having to be rescheduled for 12th May. Good luck to Nik and the team in the return fixture and come on boys, we’re right behind you!!
Congratulations to all the competition winners so far this season who have found a bit of early season form and for qualifying for the end of season ‘Champion of Champion’s’ competition.
Norman Hodge Foursomes: Neil Carver & Lee Bull
Challenge Cup: John ‘Ebenezer’ Rawlings
Austin Cup Qualifier: Stuart ‘Bomber’ Spencer
Grendon Cup: Martin ‘Big Daddy’ Reay
Atherstone also managed to secure the Nichols Morgan Trophy, contested by the club officials from the three clubs, Atherstone, Hinckley and Nuneaton. Congratulations to the winning team consisting of Ian Cartwright, Wayne Moore, Ann Farmer, Phil Challis, Les Jackson and Gary King.
Well, as April draws to a close, let’s hope we finally get a bit of sunshine in May!!
Coming up in May
Coming up in May we have our Spring Quiz hosted by quiz master Ian Jacob. The last quiz was won by a fabulous team, with the combined brain power to match a NASA super computer, so please come along and support this event and see if you can walk away with the title of Quiz Champions!
The Tuesday night members draw is still taking place and the jackpot currently stands at £500. The draw takes place on the big screen between 8pm & 9pm, so please come and have a drink or perhaps a bite to eat and see if you can walk away with the cash prize.
Whilst we’re on the subject of ‘Big Cash Prizes’……. Don’t forget the hole in one sweep has now rolled over to £700+, so please enter when you register for the competition on a Sunday.
Anyone who is interested in playing in any of the AB team matches, please either enter you name on the sheet in the changing room notice board or speak to Wayne Moore.
Although it is some time away yet, the Captain’s away weekend in Bristol will soon be upon us. All monies are due to be paid by the end of June, so can you please ensure that the payments are in on time to minimise the amount of chasing around I’ll have to do!!
Joint Captain’s Project
Ann and I are pleased to announce that our joint captain’s project this year will be generating sufficient funds to enhance the first tee and surrounding area, to create an aesthetically pleasing feature that leaves a really good first impression for members, visitors and guests. Although the plans have not yet been fully drafted up, we would welcome any constructive input from members and your support will be greatly appreciated to enable us to achieve our goal.
Don’t forget we are following on from last year’s successful ‘Splash for Cash’, where we intend to keep to this going to support the Captains project. Any ball going in one of the ponds around the course will result in a 50 pence fine and also the bunkers down the 18th hole……
