Captain's Blog June 2019

Well there we go again, another month gone it feels like I'm ageing quicker than ever and I've got some grey hair showing through.

Firstly I'd like to say how brilliant our course is looking and playing, I know it's our course and we are a little biased but I think you would have to go a long way to find anywhere better.

Credit to Alan and his team for all the work they put into keeping it in top condition.

Our social calendar for June kicked off with our first "Epsom Derby day" in our clubhouse and what a cracking day it was. 60 members and guests dressed in their finest, ate, drank and had a flutter on the horses, atmosphere was brilliant and it was good to see so many people having a great time late into the evening.

A big thankyou to Martin Reay and Tibby for giving up their time on the day and to Gary King, Sue Starmer, Joy, the catering team and my wife Karen for all their help in preparing for the day, I'm sure it will be a day added annually to our social calendar.

Family fun day was another successful day all tee times where taken for our annual nine hole event and once again the sun played it's part in filling our patio area and clubhouse into late afternoon, for once the gazebo survived Gary and Phil's "flames" barbecue, a big thanks to both.

Once again Ian Jacob brought his quiz mastering to AGC clubhouse for our summer quiz night and what a great turnout and evening it was, thanks Ian for singlehanded making it a great evening.

Coming up in July we have our 125th year club celebration on Saturday July 13th.

The day will start with a golf Am Am competition with tee times running from 7.30 am through to 2.30 pm, cost on the day is £20 for a team of four playing golf.

There will be a half-way house set up at the back of our 9th green for bbq food and refreshments (chargeable).

We also have a pig roast later in that evening free to all while it lasts, followed by live music late into the night.

Please come along and support your club in the evening even if you’re not golfing during the day.

We need your support!

Congratulations to all our June competition winners, it's a terrific achievement to win a competition around our AGC course.

Well played to you all.

This month was the build up to our Tripartite week where we compete against Hinckley and Nuneaton for several trophies.

I thought it fitting to delay June's blog to include this event.

The week started at Atherstone with a 54 hole challenge between Captains and vice Captain's from all three clubs.

We teed it up at 6.15am moving on to Hinckley and then finishing at Nuneaton at 8.30pm.

Gary king and myself where under no pressure whatsoever to deliver on the day after several text messages saying that Atherstone had never lost this event, I'm pleased to say we didn't disappoint and brought the trophy back another year.

Over to you Gary ha ha.

Thanks to Joy for serving up a lovely breakfast on that morning and all that helped out.

Wednesday 3rd July our Hodge and Rose Bowl teams headed for Hinckley in the hope to bring some silverware back to Atherstone, unfortunately we came up against two strong teams that day and a course that was set up quite difficult.

Nuneaton made it a clean sweep on the day and bagged both events. Hinckley where again perfect hosts and I know everyone who participated had a good day, thankyou to all our players and caddies who gave it their best.

Thursday 4th July we headed to Nuneaton for Jarvis and Chadaway events, where we again come up against two very strong teams and home advantage certainly proved to be the order of the day with Nuneaton once again bagging both events, regardless of the result again it was a brilliant day and Nuneaton hosted perfectly as usual.

A big thankyou again to our players and caddies for their efforts.

Friday 5th July we were on home soil playing scratch golf for th Observer Trophy, Nuneaton setting an obvious trend over the first couple of days it was down to our boys to deliver on home soil and they didn't disappoint with a massive 18 shot win, it would be interesting to see if that's a record for this event.

Big congratulations to the Observer team.

Once again thanks to everyone who was involved on and off the course, you’re a credit to our club.

Overall it was a very positive month for our club on and off the course and long may it continue, looking forward to seeing a full clubhouse for the 125th anniversary day and good luck to all playing in the golf event.
