Captains Blog August 2019
Where do I start.. August was another month that was particularly busy for myself having both Captains day and Captains away weekend all within a few days.
Firstly we had a change of guard in the clubhouse with Bob and Joy heading for retirement and our new stewards Neil and Lisa taking over for what will be a new venture for their family at our golf club, can I wish on behalf of our members and myself a very happy retirement to Bob and Joy and the very best for the future to Neil and Lisa, I'm sure they will settle in nicely.
The start of August was kicked off with our Club Championship played over 36 holes on Sunday 11th. Congratulations to Gareth Leyshon who held off the challenge of Nigel Rhodes and Luke Challis, taking the title by only one shot.
So to throw Neil and Lisa in at the deep end, their first full day in AGC clubhouse was to look after 20 teams of four and more on " Captains day." 80 players took part in a shambles competition which proved to be a great day and a format that everyone enjoyed, with nearest the pins and longest drives on 11 of the 18 holes. Overall winners of the day were Michael Calvert, Martin Horton, Adam Chapman and D. Whiston with a remarkable 109pts. Thanks to everyone for their support and helping make it another special day in my Captains year it is really appreciated.
Six days later 44 of us headed off for Liverpool on a coach for " The Captains Weekend Away"
We played 3 courses over 3 days, lived in Mathew Street and somehow managed to grab some sleep in between.. (well some of us did)!
What a brilliant weekend with great company, thanks to you all for a weekend that I'll treasure and never forget.

Congratulations to all our August competition winners, well deserved on a course that doesn't give you a lot back.
Congratulations of the month has to go to our Avon League team who became Champions once again.
Needing an away victory against Oakridge Gc to secure the league they only went and smashed it with a very impressive 4-2 result on a tricky away course, a well-deserved end to the season. if you ask Nik Sweatman it's all about who captains the side, Martin Hughes says it's all about the final putt to clinch the league. I’ll let you decide haha, well done to you all.
Our men's team run by Mr Gary King is still being well supported and playing some good golf at local courses. A special mention to Phil Green who took over the reins for the home game against Kenilworth and pulled off a 6-0 clean sweep! It's the first one I've ever known, although we nearly did it last year against Hinckley but Chris Bassford lost the last game on the last hole, we don't mention it now tho! Good result Phil and keep the good work going Gary.
Once again a mention to our greens staff who continue to keep AGC course in excellent condition for us, I've played several courses recently and I have to say Atherstone takes some beating, keep up the good work gents It's really appreciated.
September is a bit quiet on the social side after a busy five months I think we need it.
Saturday 7th is the Kev Powell Memorial day, which is always very well supported with a golf day and live music into the night in the clubhouse.
Sunday 15th is the Cancer Research Texas Scramble day, tee times are still available, it's open to non-members and is only £40 for a team of four, great day for a great cause so get that sheet filled.
Saturday 5th October is our annual Champions of Champions and presentation day, invitations to all qualifiers are in the post, good luck to everyone who plays on the day and I'll see you all there unfortunately I'll be on the " won nothing table" again this year.. I really must try harder.
I think that covers most of August, have a good September you all and play well.
